After Extraction and Immediate Denture Instructions
Your new denture has been constructed to fit your mouth, but you have had several teeth extractions and we need to assist the healing. You should keep your denture in place for the first 24 hours after surgery (including while you sleep), unless there is excessive bleeding or soreness. Your immediate denture will act to help control bleeding and limit swelling.
Daily Care & Storage
Starting tomorrow, or as instructed, gently remove the immediate denture twice a day and rinse with mouth with salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in a glass of luke-warm water). Clean the immediate denture by gently brushing with denture paste and rinsing under water.
Replace the immediate denture back into your mouth immediately, as swelling can occur and you may be unable to reinsert the denture later.
You will wear your dentures at night until such time your Dentist instructs you to remove and store them in water (usually after the review 2 weeks following surgery).
Healing
The removal of many teeth at once is different to having a single tooth extracted. Having an immediate denture is also very different to other dentures.
Because the immediate denture sits on the areas of the extractions, the gums and bone will develop sore areas which can be adjusted by your Dentist. It will make removing and reinserting the immediate dentures uncomfortable at first, and this is normal.
Bleeding
Mild bleeding will occur under the immediate denture for 2-3 days. Biting down on the immediate dentures with light pressure will promote clotting and decrease bleeding. Try not to chew too much as this can increase bleeding. Avoid rinsing vigorously, spitting, smoking and do not use a straw during the first 24 hours.
Swelling
Swelling usually peaks by 3 days. During the first 2 days you can place icepacks onto the side of your face or areas of the extractions to help reduce swelling. Sleeping with your head elevated can also help with reducing swelling.
Sore Spots
When immediate dentures are inserted you will develop sore spots. Your bite will not feel perfect at first either. You may find your mouth produces extra saliva, you have speech difficulties and a feeling of gagging or difficulty swallowing. These will be overcome in the following days and weeks, but can be assisted through adjustments with your Dentist.
Antibiotics and Pain Relief
Take your Antibiotics and Pain Medications as required. If you develop a rash or hives, discontinue all medications and contact your Dentist or an Emergency Department. Do not drive or operate heavy machinery after tkaing pain medications.
No Smoking
You should not smoke or vape following surgery for 1 week.
Followups
Return for a Review Appointment 2 weeks following surgery. Sutures will be removed during this visit.
Immediate Dentures will require a reline following healing. The first reline is usually a quick in mouth reline, then after some 6 months a more stronger permanent reline is performed as the ridge reshapes. New Dentures are usually made after 12 months.
